"I have asthma, but I don't let it stop me. I am healthy because I learned to breathe easily." — Maya

Maya knows how hard it can be to live with asthma. That’s why she strives to breathe easily every day. She gets help from her family. If she doesn’t keep her asthma under control, it can stop her from playing sports and doing physical activities. It can also make it hard for her to breathe even when she isn’t active. Maya doesn’t want to wheeze at night or struggle to breathe during the day. So, she takes steps to say “I am healthy.”

Asthma is a long-term illness. It makes the airways to your lungs narrow, swollen or blocked. It’s important to keep asthma under control. Here’s how.

Asthma action plan:

  • An asthma action plan is used to help families or other caregivers manage a child’s asthma when the child is in their care. The plan is divided into zones. The goal is to prevent asthma emergencies by preventing and controlling flare-ups. The plan is personalized to your child so every plan will look a little bit different. Download an asthma action plan so you and your child’s doctor can personalize it for your child. Provide a copy to your child’s school and anyone else who cares for your child. Generally, the plan will include a list of medications taken, early warning signs for asthma symptoms, and instructions on when to use the medicines and when to call your health care provider.
