Symptoms and triggers
Asthma symptoms can be mild or severe. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few minutes to hours or days.
There are several tests and exams to diagnose asthma. There are also many methods of asthma treatment.
Common symptoms
- Coughing, especially at night
- Coughing during exercise
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe)
Are you having any of these symptoms? If so, talk to your doctor.
Triggers
Asthma triggers are things that can make your asthma worse. Triggers can lead to asthma attacks if left untreated. It is important to know what your asthma triggers are and to avoid them.
Common triggers include:
- Smoke
- Dust mites
- Pets
- Mold and mildew
- Strong odors, like perfume
- Cockroaches
- Changes in weather
- Cold and flu
- Physical displays of emotion, such as excessive shouting or laughing
Talk with your doctor about your asthma. Your doctor can help you figure out what triggers your asthma.
Many factors can contribute to asthma symptoms. That’s why it’s important for you to practice everyday healthy habits so you can say “I am healthy.”
