Do you have diabetes? Are you at risk? Do you have any of the signs and symptoms? Here are steps you can take toward living a healthier life.
- Get your blood sugar checked regularly. Your primary care provider (PCP) can give you a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test to help determine if your blood sugar is controlled. You should also check your levels at home. Your PCP can help you figure out how often you will need to.
- Get your urine and eyes checked once a year. Diabetes can affect your eyes and kidneys, even when you feel well. Be smart and take time to get the tests and exams you need to manage your disease.
- Discuss your medication routine with your PCP. Your PCP is your partner in staying healthy. Together, you can agree on a routine that works best.
- Eat right and exercise. The right types of food can help keep your blood sugar level normal. Try not to skip meals. Prepare colorful plates of fruits and vegetables. Eat healthy portions and have small, healthy snacks. Move daily. Adults should exercise for 30 minutes every day, children 60 minutes.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Even small changes in weight can make a big difference in your blood sugar levels.
