Questions for your doctor
It can be hard to know what to ask your doctor, especially if you don’t know much about a specific health condition. Here’s a guide to help you.
- What is my height and weight? Are these healthy levels?
- What is my blood pressure?
- What is my cholesterol?
- Do I need these tests and exams? If so, how often? Are there any other tests I need?
- How can I improve my diet and lifestyle to keep my health under control?
- Are there tests results you can share with me?
- How will I be informed of test results, when needed?
- How does my family history affect my risk of diabetes or other health conditions?
- How often should I have check-ups?
- Do I need to see a specialist?
- Am I at risk for other health conditions? If so, what are they and how can I reduce my risk?
Here are things your doctor may do or ask when you go in for an exam. If any of these items are missed, be sure to ask your doctor about them.
Test your:
- Blood and urine
- Reflexes
Measure your:
- Height and weight
- Blood pressure and pulse
Check your:
- Eyes
- Mouth and teeth
- Neck and thyroid glands
- Abdomen
- Skin, especially where you inject insulin
- Heart and lungs with a stethoscope
- Hands, fingers and bare feet
Ask you about:
- How and when you were diagnosed with diabetes, and any lab tests you’ve had
- Medicines you’re taking and your current treatment plan
- Problems you’ve had from your treatment
- Your medical history
- Your eating habits
- How often and hard you exercise
- Times you’ve had ketoacidosis and low blood glucose reactions
- Your family history of diabetes
- Problems you’ve had during a pregnancy
